Looking on, Shen Yi saw how Gu Yun couldn’t even feign nonchalance as soon as the topic turned to Prince Yan. He had never seen Gu Yun so serious about anyone. Shen Yi was shocked and a bit afraid to follow this line of conversation to its end.

Chang Geng sniffed the air. “Miss Chen changed her formula?” Gu Yun rubbed at the teeth marks on his arm. “Bitey little lunatic.” The pacifying fragrance quickly took effect, filling Chang Geng’s lungs and relaxing his body until he couldn’t muster the slightest bit of strength or hostility.

While Gu Yun was in the backyard researching how to help the foreign seedlings adapt to the capital’s climate, Chang Geng, wanting to keep himself busy, rediscovered the long-forgotten local flower seeds. Somehow, mysteriously, they ended up swapping their gardening projects.

It had been almost eleven years since the day Gu Yun found him near Yanhui Town. Gu Yun had spent most of those at the border and on the battlefield. They were apart more often than they were together…but Gu Yun had never left his heart for a single day.

After learning Prince Yan had taken the official inland road along the canal, he abandoned the idea of flying by armored hawk and took a regiment of light cavalry along the same road.

The way Chang Geng looked at Gu Yun, with that expression—Shen Yi suddenly felt that coming to the Marquis Estate to cadge a meal was a mistake for which he’d paid with his eyes.

Perhaps Marshal Gu really was a ferocious man capable of warding off evil spirits, for Chang Geng’s second bout of sleep was completely free of the demons and monsters that usually haunted his dreams. He slumbered on until the skies brightened into a hazy dawn.

After thoroughly flattering the two ladies with a few words, Gu Yun turned and gave Shen Yi a cursory pat on the shoulder. Shen Yi hadn’t received a speck of sincerity from this man in years. He scoffed. “So you do remember I exist. I’m honored, sir.”

Whenever Gu Yun was occupied at the Northern Camp and refused to come home, Chang Geng would stroll over to tend the flowers and play with his birds. Within half a month, he had trained the Shen family’s terror of a myna bird into a honey-mouthed creature that complimented everyone it saw…

Yet in the chilly night air, his breath felt like a raging ball of fire burning in his chest. Chang Geng fled back to his own courtyard, heart racing. He exhaled heavily as he pressed his forehead against the sword-training puppet standing by the courtyard’s entrance.
