Substitution of expertise with enthusiasm doesn’t work when so much of what our NHS clinical staff do is based on years of training, exams and experience. @bma.org.uk agrees with @rcn.org.uk that we shouldn’t be replacing expert clinicians the way the NHS is currently rushing to do.

For the past five days, tens of thousands of resident doctors in England took strike action over jobs and pay, yet it didn’t need to happen. Our members showed their collective strength and are demanding a credible new offer from the Government.

Patients need doctors. Doctors need jobs. We're on strike because there were no new jobs in the government’s offer last week, they simply repurposed jobs that already existed for the sake of ‘new’ jobs on paper. We need the Government to create more training places for resident doctors.

We wrote to David Lammy and Wes Streeting on Tuesday to express concern over access to healthcare for prisoners on hunger strike. After reports of delayed admission to hospital for a prisoner, we remain concerned for the welfare of the remaining hunger strikers. (1/2)

Across the country resident doctors were out on the picket lines showing their collective strength. These strikes didn’t have to happen, Wes Streeting could have listened to doctors and come forward with workable, sustainable solutions for both jobs and pay.

Reading the report really took me back to those days all doctors and NHS workers will remember; knowing it was coming, knowing it was going to be bad. The parts about the opportunities squandered - not just early on but repeatedly - to reduce the impact are really hard to read.

Today's BMJ investigation exposes the widespread exploitation of locally employed doctors, who face dire terms and conditions and lack clear development opportunities. We're clear the Government must urgently address this situation by mandating fair, standardised contracts.
