A 2022 national research project by The Young Women’s Movement and Scottish Women’s Aid surveyed young women aged 12–25 and found that: 👉 75% knew someone who has experienced abuse in a relationship. 1/2

Is your ex threatening to share intimate photos of you? In Scotland, it is a crime to disclose or threaten to disclose an intimate photograph or video without consent. Offenders can face up to five years in prison and be put on the sex offenders register. 1/2

This month, we’re shining a light on the experiences of young women affected by domestic abuse in Scotland. From control and coercion to online abuse, isolation and pressure – young women face unique challenges, and they often go unseen. 1/3

Generational attitudes can make it hard for older women who are experiencing domestic abuse to seek help. Some feel they should be able to cope quietly as “mature” women or worry they won’t be believed. But abuse is abuse, no matter how old you are, and you deserve support. 1/2

📣We’re excited to share that digital versions of our helpline posters and leaflets are now available in multiple languages, including English, Polish, Punjabi, Urdu, Arabic, Ukrainian, Chinese, Spanish, and French! 1/3

Many older survivors have their own health issues which abusers exploit to gain control. An abusive partner might withhold medication, threaten to damage medical equipment or use physical impairment as an excuse to isolate someone. This can make women feel trapped. 1/2

Many women over 50 face financial barriers to leaving an abuser. Often they have little or no independent income and may even hold savings or a pension that disqualify them from benefits or social housing. 1/2

Many older women report that while physical violence may reduce as their partner ages, coercive control and emotional abuse continue or increase. This long-term trauma leaves many ‘invisible’ survivors, women who have endured decades of abuse and think there is no way out. 1/3

This month, we’re focusing on the experiences of older women (aged 50+) who are living with – or have survived – domestic abuse. Domestic abuse can happen at any age. 1/4

Women who are being stalked by an abusive partner or ex-partner are often dismissed, or told they are ‘over-reacting’. If someone tells you they’re being stalked, one of the most supportive things you can do is believe them. How you can help: 1/2

Stalking isn’t just annoying – it is terrifying for the women who experience it. It can cause anxiety, issues with sleeping and hypervigilance. The effects of stalking on a domestic abuse survivor are severe and can last long after a relationship has ended. 1/2

Perpetrators of domestic abuse are using technology to stalk their partners or ex-partners. Abusers often use spyware, AirTags, location sharing, and even social media to monitor and harass their victims. Signs of digital stalking: 1/3

It’s National Stalking Awareness Week this week. Many people think of stalking as something strangers do - but most victims are stalked by an ex or current partner. Stalking is a form of coercive control, which is a common tactic used by domestic abusers.

Digital abuse is a form of domestic abuse, and it’s more common than you might think. 🚨 Look out for these warning signs: ⚠️ Using technology to track your movements without consent ⚠️ Bombarding you with texts, making you feel you can’t switch off 1/3

If you are experiencing domestic abuse and your abuser is using digital tools as weapons, the blame is theirs, not yours. ❌ It’s not because you “shared too much.” ❌ It’s not because you “should’ve been more careful.” ❌ It’s not because you “let them in.” 1/3

When an abuser demands access to your phone, your passwords, or your private messages, it’s not ‘love’ or ‘concern' - it’s control. Digital abuse is a powerful tool in domestic abuse, used to track, manipulate, and isolate victims. 1/3
