I'm teaching my Cultural Astronomy class again online: 5/26-7/2! We examine expressions of astronomy across the globe and throughout history, gaining an appreciation for how astronomical phenomena influence culture & how culture influences astronomical study.

Our Solar System is orbiting the center of our Galaxy at about 220 km/s so in 2025 we collectively traveled something like 7 billion kilometers across the Milky Way. Once in a while, when you have a moment, it’s worthwhile to take a look around, see where you are, and appreciate how far you’ve come.

Big thank you to Lara Waldrop for the talk at SSL. Lara leads the Carruthers Geocorona Observatory. It will orbit the Sun to capture UV images of Earth’s exosphere. SSL built many of the instruments and will contribute to the research and operate the spacecraft.

I honestly can’t stop thinking about this RFK speech. A lot of the outrage around it is focused on pointing out that it’s not true. But so fucking what if it was? Do people whose bodies don’t work not deserve to exist in society? If all these things were true for a person are they less worthy?

I will say to you what I say to my students. We know the climate is changing, we know why it is changing and that we are the cause, we know what we need to do. We. Just. Need. To. Do. It. (3/)

When you look at the list of institutions they want to defund: libraries, museums, the Smithsonian, public schools, PBS, NPR, archives, you can clearly see that the real threat to an authoritarian regime is an informed and educated public

I was honored to speak at the Stand Up for Science March in Berkeley yesterday. The text of my remarks is in the photos. I hope this momentum continues. Let there be light.
