Exciting news! We’ve discovered beaver signs on the River Trent at The Wolseley Centre. We don’t know where the beaver came from. We’ve been monitoring beaver activity on the Trent for a while, alongside work to bring wild beavers back to Staffs (requires a licence from Natural England).

Did you know that brown hares stay active all year round? Their thick fur keeps them cosy even when temps plumet. Unlike rabbits, they don’t bother with burrows but instead rest in “forms” (shallow dips).

Each winter redwings arrive from Iceland and Scandinavia and remain with us until mid‑April. They are easy to spot with their creamy eye‑stripe and orange‑red flanks. As the weather worsens they often move from fields and hedgerows to feed in gardens and parks.

At just 3mm long the riverwood riffle beetle is BIG news for environmentalists in Staffordshire. Why? Because it hasn't been recorded here for more than 150 years! Our incredibly knowledgeable volunteer David Coles discovered on his moth trap sheet late one summer evening.
