Today, the new academic year has started with our course on Water Quality and Water Quantity. Students will learn the importance of a system analysis and how to determine surface water quality.

Today, we started with our practical course Aquatic Ecology and Water Quality @WUR. 35 enthusiastic students determining parameter values for their model to describe the oxygen dynamics in one of the university ponds. A pike checked out their activities.

A magnificent book arrived.👌 Winfried Lampert's opus magnum on the waterflea Daphnia magna, four years after he passed away.🙏 A great pleasure to remember the fantastic time I had at his Max Planck Institute for Limnology, a privilege he mentored me during part of my PhD research👍

Got some nice pictures from the team today of the application of the P-binder Phoslock to lake De Ster (Belgium). Sediment cores have been taken and half of them will be treated with Phoslock to mimic the application in the lab.

April 15/16, under guidance of Limnological Solutions Int., the novel P-binder LimnoPLUS (aka Zeofixer, 10% La) was applied for the 1st time to an isolated lake in Europe. The lake had an internal load issue, let's see how it develops. Experiment with sediment cores runs in parallel in our lab.

A beautiful day with a thin ice layer covering the pond and inside our enclosures. Great having the permission to experiment in this eutrophic pond a few steps from our lab. Some enclosures have been treated with novel P binders. We'll see how they develop over spring and summer.

Each morning at 08:20 hrs, a small group of 15 enthusiastic MSc students join the course on "Applications in Soil and Water Chemistry" @w-u-r.bsky.social. Today, we addressed chemistry in lake restoration, tomorrow the sessions on chemical equilibria start.

Had a great meeting in Olsztyn at the department of geoengineering to learn about the history of this famous lake restoration group, the 1st Olszewski tube (replaced in 1976😉) that's already running for 69 years❗️, and current projects. System analysis guided interventions💪Great science👍

Today, I had a meeting on lake restoration at Water Authority Delfland. This water authority was founded 735 years ago in 1289 and is located in the centre of Delft (NL), in a beautiful old building with new bright architecture behind it. Undoubtedly an inspiring place to work.
