We honored Director Zoe Heller of CalRecycle for her remarkable dedication to protecting our ocean and communities, and who led a robust two-year public engagement process to develop regulations implementing #SB54. Her commitment and that of her team are a model of what public service looks like.

We honored Sen. Catherine Blakespear, who consistently “walks the talk” with zero waste initiatives and works to fully implement #SB54, which mandates reduction of single-use plastic and allocates funds to communities hit hard by the impacts of single-use plastics.

We recognized Assemblymember @bauerkahan.bsky.social for championing successful legislation to fully eliminate single-use plastic bags at grocery stores and for her dedicated efforts to address microplastic pollution.

We connected with many legislators and their staff who are – with passion and purpose – continuing California’s tradition of leadership on ocean and environmental issues. And we honored three individuals as our 2025 Ocean Champions. All of them made reducing #PlasticPollution a priority in 2024.

It was great to be in Sacramento this week for the 20th California Ocean Day at the State Capitol. The Aquarium team, including Executive Director @juliepackard.montereybayaquarium.org, joined scores of advocates and organizations to support policies that will protect and restore the ocean.

🦦Keystone species like sea otters and sea stars keep ecosystems thriving. Sea otters play a crucial role in maintaining healthy kelp forests by keeping sea urchin populations in check.

With more food available, sea otter numbers grew. This research demonstrates how ecosystems & habitats are fundamentally connected systems—& how changes in one species or ecosystem can have significant ripple effects.

✨This research reveals a surprising link between coastal ecosystems: the mass die-off of ochre stars is indirectly benefiting sea otters. ⁉️How? The decreasing sea star population led to a surge in mussels, a top prey item for sea otters.

A new paper in Science Advances by Dr. Joshua Smith, a Monterey Bay Aquarium scientist, demonstrates that loss of a key predator in one ecosystem can cascade across ecosystems to affect another top predator in a neighboring ecosystem.
