Does it bother you when you can't read the title of a book or something? Or a sign? There's a gas station here where the second word is "Xpress" but the "x" is badly designed and it just looks like "press". I joke that I'm going to go in and complain to the cashier.

Had this snippet and I don't remember where it came from. I must have did a screenshot of a photo of one of my small press zines. I think it's from No Sex? Some old early 80s thing. I guess I thought it was funny because Dark Horse Comix existing before Dark Horse Comics.

Faith and the Mayor are top tier villains, but Glory stole the show. Season 5 remains my favorite and each time I re-watch the series it just remains at the top for me. In fact, I tend to stop watching at the end of 5. I know what comes next... a mixed bag of very highs and very, very, very lows.

Wonderful atmosphere makes me want to know about this character!

“Family Values” By Ron Cobb From 1975

You know what always went through my head when this came up? That they must be really hot in those clothes.

You know, when I was a kid looking at this page I always assumed that Willingham drawing was a caecilia. It's right above that description and it's remotely similar to the description (my brain has a high fuzz ratio). Clearly it's meant to be the basilisk, but that's never how I viewed it.

If someone's opinion sounds fishy but the person seems very cool and respected, don't react immediately. Sit with it. Think about it. If the opinion still feels off after a time, and if you feel like it's important to do so, then disagree. Long winded way of saying don't knee jerk.

Every time we make a big stride forward in some kind of technology to the point that it can ruin or destroy us, we have huge public discussions about it... but we still proceed. We did it with nukes, and we'll do it with AI. Tech has no ethical brakes other than what we force upon it. Scary thought

Here are the weapons described in the text of Dead Wizards, sans the sling and regular bow. Obviously a soupy mix of cultures inspiring this grouping, same as the whole game. It isn't any one thing and nothing is represented precisely as its real-world progenitor. It's just stuff I think is neat.

While I'm talking sword and sorcery... If you haven't read Fritz Leiber's Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser series, you should. But what I want to say about it here is, if you have never read them: skip the first two stories in the Swords series. I know, I know! Blasphemous suggestion.

Finished Tales from the Vulgar Unicorn. It's book 2. I started it months ago, dropped it, then picked it back up. I enjoy these stories. Having different authors can be a bit jarring, but that's part of the fun. The way a character is presented differently per author's voice keeps it spirited.

Finished this a few days ago. Really enjoyed it. The plot twists are very easy to predict, but I don't think that's a hindrance as this isn't a mystery novel. It kind of adds to the bleak inevitability of it all. Which sounds dreadful but it's actually very lively and brisk. I'll read the next.

Isles of Rone: Drifting Path The apex of a once tall hill is topped by an arch. Through it leads the way to other worlds. But they pull the island apart... now the upper half hovers in the liminal pull, bobbing as if on water. Each year the gap grows.

Never heard of this, but I like it.

The soundtrack to Conan the Destroyer seems to reflect a push for the character to become friendlier to wider audiences, more like a Superman. It's like they told Poledorous to "make it more Williams". The shift from an R rating to PG can be felt in the music.

I really did like The Sword. Great riffs, great compositions. Great sound. It's possible I heard them fist on Guitar Hero or something, I can't remember.

This is such a cool drawing. I don't know anything about the Argentine artist Limbic Splitter but I admire the vision. This is the artist's rendering of some imagery from the Kalevala, which I only know from AD&D's Deities & Demigods book. Super cool.

Girl meet monkey

This appears to be a Japanese publication of John Jakes' Brak the Barbarian vs. the Sorceress. I don't know who the artist is but it's such a lovely weird painting!

My experience in small press publishing lead me to refer to certain formats in ways that are not exactly "correct". But this is how I learned 'em. 8.5x11 inch = full size 5.5x8.5 = digest 4.25*5.5 = mini 8.5x7 = half legal This is because I'm American and the 8.5x11 is our standard size for paper.

I fucking LOVE this one. Artist seems to be Chistophe KRO. Some might say this is a bad cover... I say this is van art.

This John Pound cover often gets cited as an example of "bad" cover art. But I don't know why. That's some nice vanishing point perspective and good treatment of the water surface. Weird boat, but cool. Maybe the bg is a little too uniform? I don't know why folks criticize this.

My first car

I recently picked up Ariel issue 4 (the gold one), which completes my little collection. These books are not in awesome condition, but that's fine by me. I just love having them. What a fun little short-lived series. And this format (size, style) is massively influential on me. There are others...

This gang of dangerous thugs has been roaming around where I work, causing a ruckus and threatening people. I try not to walk to my car alone anymore.

Proof that I did in fact run D&D 5e a few times. I'm getting ready to run it again soon. It's not my preferred system, but when your kid asks you to run D&D and they specifically want 5e, you do it. It's a rare thing that either of them ever want to RP, so I put my grognardisms in a box and play.

Is there a modern equivalent of DAW SF? Times have changed and there are many, many small publishers out there. So maybe it's more a matter of finding stuff here and there from various publishers. I'm just curious though.
