NATO’s article 5 has only been invoked once - in defence of the US after 9/11. The UK and other European NATO countries paid dearly in lives and money as a result. Trump’s mind is too far gone to care, but the American people need to be firmly reminded of these facts.

We are now in an era of unrestrained power politics. The rules-based international order is dead. Smaller countries need to form strong alliances to resist large, predatory nations, of which the US now counts as one. Reintegrating with the EU should be an urgent UK national security priority.
