Say hello to pirate the happy crocodile at the Holland Bay Crocodile Sanctuary. The sanctuary is home to several of our Jamaican crocodiles. The sanctuary is doing well after the hurricane Melissa . However we have to do what we can do to help crocodile conservation.

Did you know Jamaica has its own endemic bamboo species? 🌿 It’s called Chusquea abietifolia, found mainly in the high-elevation forests of the Blue and John Crow Mountains. It forms dense thickets, supports wildlife, and only flowers every few decades before dying back, a classic bamboo behaviour.

While carrying out assessments after Hurricane Melissa in the cloud forest of the Blue Mountains, we came across a huge Eucalyptus tree blocking the path. Residents said a lightning strike hit the tree. Even without electricity in the homes, they still saw sparks coming from a conduit.

A special big up to a member of the social media family who found this snake in southern Manchester. It is likely Tropidophis jamaicensis – the Jamaica dwarf boa – endemic to Jamaica and listed as endangered. This small, non-venomous snake spends most of its time hidden in leaf litter and rocks

Look at what I found during my assessment of the Blue Mountains after Hurricane Melissa. It is our endemic and endangered Red-eyed Frog (Eleutherodactylus nubicola). This species is found nowhere else on Earth and depends on the cool, wet cloud forest of the upper mountains.

An AudioMoth and a Titley Chorus acoustic recorder were deployed before Hurricane Melissa. I’ll be taking them down soon to review the recordings and see which birds and bats passed through the area during and after the storm.

The mongoose was introduced to Jamaica in 1872 to control rats in sugar cane fields but it quickly became one of the worst invasive species on the island. It preys on our native lizards, snakes, frogs, birds, and their eggs, pushing some species to extinction and others to the brink. Q

I’ve been getting many questions about the increase in “ratbat” (bat) activity around fruit trees& even flying over people’s heads (outdoors) at night after Hurricane Melissa. No need to worry, our bats are simply busy searching for food after the storm damaged many of their natural feeding areas

Please take pictures of anything you observe in the wild, especially after Hurricane Melissa. I found this mushroom in Millbank, Portland and uploaded the photo to @iNaturalist so other experts can help identify it. It also becomes a valuable record of the species in Jamaica.

John Crow Mountains monitoring wildlife after Hurricane Melissa, using acoustic devices: AudioMoths, SM Mini Bat recorders, and SM4 units for birds. Post-hurricane wildlife surveys are critical. Research needs funding, so support in any way you can makes a real difference.

A special big up to Maintenance Boss for rescuing this duck that was stuck in the mud in the Serge Island area, St. Thomas, after the hurricane. He always sees them flying by, but this was the first time he got so close. He freed the little guy and it flew safely back into the wild.

Nature has an interesting way of repairing itself. I noticed that several of our native palms in the St Elizabeth wetlands are now flowering, providing important food for insects, bats and birds at a critical time.

I am so happy to share what people are doing to take care of our feathery friends impacted by the hurricane. As you can see, Aunty Fae put out bird baths and even fruits for the birds. I will make sure some hummingbird feeders are placed there when they arrive.

The Westwood High School for Girls, located in Stewart Town, Trelawny, is one of Jamaica’s oldest girls’ schools (founded 1882). The school’s campus was impacted by Hurricane Melissa, and support is needed to help rebuild and restore both its educational and boarding facilities.

The ring-tailed pigeon is endemic to Jamaica. They’re usually seen feeding in trees, not on the ground — but these two were observed on the ground eating pimento berries in Stewart Town. The surrounding forest was impacted by Hurricane Melissa, which may have affected their feeding behavior
