Frank Miller’s The Dark Knight Returns apparently became 40 years old today! If you didn’t catch my video already, I go into detail on how it was a surprising, recurring inspiration for the makers of Batman Forever:

Thinking about how the 1987 New Archies show updated Pop's Chock'lit Shoppe for a young, modern audience. Of course, 40 years later, it's now probably harder to explain to a young modern audience than the original.

It's been nearly a week since I saw Project Hail Mary. Such a pleasure to have a blockbuster movie full of substance, spectacle and emotion that for days later you can keep unravelling and dissect. It works on so many levels. If you've not seen it, believe the (much deserved) hype!

I love this shot from Rambo II, in which a helicopter flies across the screen. It's a static, locked-off shot, but somehow they got the real helicopter to bank, wipe and clear the frame at the perfect diagonal angle. All filmed in-camera. Helicopter Unit Directed & Photographed by Peter MacDonald.

5 cable-controlled masks gave Kong a wide range of expression: 1 was for "normal" looks, 2 was fixed in a partial roar, and 3 opened in a full roar. 4 was sans cables for long shots where the cables had to be hidden. Learn more in my new book KING KONG: THE HISTORY OF A MOVIE ICON, available now.

For a mid '90s film, I2I & Stand Out from a Goofy Movie are such '80s sounding songs. Big synths, drum machines, guitar solos, key changes... My theory: Powerline had new hit material for the '90s, but these 2 were his iconic, greatest '80s hits, similar to Prince & Michael Jackson at the time.
