This is a great video essay both on the specific vulnerabilities in Flock license plate cameras used by cops in many places, but how Flock lied about efficacy and prevent camera removal, and also a compromise policy position of how we could deploy camera systems at all

constrained decoding is awesome. it lets you constrain eg code generation to a set of constraints. what if those constraints could be provided just in time, encompassing all of the project/ecosystem context, as well as the situation/session specific constraints?

One thing that's abundantly clear: passing the SAFE Research Act would permanently end the United States' ability to be competitive in any area of advanced technology. Just straight up suicidal policy-making.

This deal to reopen the government is fucking disgraceful. Tens of millions will lose their healthcare. Trump will be emboldened. This is exactly what’s wrong with Democratic Party leadership and why we need more people in Congress who will actually hold the line.

note to lots of tech companies: it's possible to build an awesome and sustainable business by focusing on giving your users superpowers (hat tip Kathy Sierra). you don't have to make extractive surveillance plays, go for weird lock in, or focus on contract stuffing! give it a shot!

I think a thing we'll learn tonight is that people fucking hate what is going on and they will straight ticket vote against anyone involved in starving people while pillaging the country and kidnapping their neighbors. I don't think it matters at all who that person is.

it's time for journos to start asking Johnson meta questions "Speaker, on 5 occasions last week you said 'I haven't seen it' when asked about news events w/big implications for public policy. Do you ever read the news, and do you agree it's problematic for the Speaker to be so woefully uninformed?"
