Over the past 6 years, the land around this significant jarrah tree was cleared and mined or turned into road. Now, it has died, likely as a result of the disturbance.

Whilst three Tingle blocks were removed from the prescribed burn plan just before Christmas, some Tingles remain in the firing line.

WA has a prescribed burning program that hasn’t changed since 1994, and in the meantime, the climate has changed enormously. DBCA are doing the same old thing, burning far too hot, not changing anything, and this is putting WA's tourism industry at risk.

Collectively the #EndForestMining alliance sent over 18,000 letters to @tanyaplibersekmp.bsky.social, calling on her to do her job, & reject clearing irreplaceable Jarrah forests. While disappointed, we are determined to limit bauxite-mining deforestation across the Northern Jarrah Forest.

Rehabilitation does not and cannot restore the Jarrah forest after bauxite mining. We need to mitigate all threats to these forests and threatened species and stop relying on false solutions that just don’t work.

The South32 approval means a further 4500ha of critical habitat in the Northern Jarrah Forests will be bulldozed and burnt. Threatened species will take a triple hit - from climate impacts, from clearing, and a failed rehabilitation program.

BREAKING: Federal Environment Minister, Tanya Plibersek has approved a proposal by South32 that would see thousands of hectares of WA’s Jarrah forest, found nowhere else on Earth, destroyed for bauxite mining.

As climate change continues to make it more difficult to manage fire, we must develop a more sophisticated, up-to-date, and best-practice prescribed burning management plan that embraces the latest scientific and First Nations wisdom.

Will a $5.7 million upgrade to the Valley of the Giants Ancient Empire trail be put at risk by the outdated prescribed burning program that has already severely damaged the surrounding Tingle forest? With more burns set to happen this autumn, the tourism experience will be badly undermined.

Jarrah forest is irreplaceable - mining removes the very bauxitic substrate on which the Jarrah forest ecosystem has evolved. Take this away and a Jarrah forest cannot be returned.

Western Australians have been sold a lie that rehabilitation after bauxite mining in Jarrah forests is working. To date none of Alcoa’s rehabilitation has been signed off by the WA Government as successfully completed in 60 years of mining.

Every year around 200,000 ha of forests & other ecosystems are burned in South West WA. Whilst the program is intended to reduce the risk of wildfire - it is increasing flammability in some ecosystems. We need an overhaul of the DBCA prescribed burns management plans.
