DEI in the federal government. At DOJ, I worked on "DEI" because I did a lot of recruiting and hiring. What that *actually* meant was finding ways to speak with diverse POTENTIAL applicants about the work of DOJ to encourage them to APPLY and to have our job openings reach broader communities. /1

Great piece - ‘Rookie factor’ for doctors is an interesting one. Always wondered about the efficiency of how we manage ‘the take’. On one hand you need frequent, repetitive exposure to build up experience, but on the other trainees tell us there’s too much service provision..

Day 18 #ResearchAdvent I’m inspired by.. two names in GI bleeding risk scores: Tim Rockwell (a surgeon no less) and O. Blatchford. In my field they were the first to use GI bleeding data to look at objectively predicting risk. They did it in upper, I did it in lower.

A nice thread to circulate to non-medical followers ⬇️ to which I’d add: 1) yes you can take analgesics before coming to ED, and 2) if you’ve injured an upper limb (especially below the elbow) take rings off asap! 3) take a mobile phone power bank to ED 4) wear a facemask!

Day 15 #ResearchAdvent My favourite place to study was the library @ Chelsea & Westminster Hospital. Hidden in the basement, nearly always empty and not far from patients or a very good cup of coffee. I don’t get to go there anymore. Is it still there? Still lovely?

One night in winter 2011 whilst working in A&E in a large London NHS Trust we cleared the board. No one in majors, no one in minors, resus sorted. We celebrated by having massive cups of black coffee. I wonder.. does this ever happen any more?

#ResearchAdvent day 14 In 3 years I’ll look back and I think.. did I really believe that NHS EHRs would be optimised and that audit was going to be paperless? That we could (appropriately) share data electronically? But since it’s now, not 3 year’s time, I continue to hope! 🖥️🩺

Day 11 #ResearchAdvent I’m excited about.. upper GI bleeding! In 2007 gastros in the UK collected data on UGIB.. reviewing interventions and outcomes, which led to the conception of new guidelines. gut.bmj.com/content/60/1... In 2022 we repeated this study - the results will be out in 2025!

So much Covid around and yeesh it seems nasty. Anecdotal reports of toothache with it too..?

Just a reminder: All vaccines used in public health have been rigorously tested. Their benefits greatly outweigh their risks. While a few people have a medical reason for not taking vaccines, most people (and the population overall) will benefit. Doctors who claim otherwise are irresponsible.
