This has been a part of being a teacher for over 20 years. We know that this benefits the whole class. Does that mean good teachers are phenomenally skilled? YES! Does it mean becoming phenomenal skilled takes time? ALWAYS! Does skill development need support? CERTAINLY!

The key question for skillful teaching is not whether direct instruction, discovery learning or retrieval practice work (the evidence is they all do at times)- but what strategy to use when, in what order, given the specific curriculum intent and the learning needs of the class.

Interesting study- showing how important phonological processing is as one route into literacy.

Many classroom behavioural techniques inadvertently use the power if public shame- they can get compliance, but other ways also work without the costs that feelings of shame bring into the learning environment.

There's a strong argument that we need to plan 'how to go about this thing called learning' into our curriculum, so children can 'learn how they learn'- and become even better at it.
