‘Memory of a Free Festival’ comprises two distinct strands: archival artefacts and ephemera pertaining to the Carnsore Point festivals and the Irish anti-nuclear movement, and new works by contemporary artists.

Just over a week remains to apply for our Graduate Artist Affiliate Scheme. Artists who have graduated, or are about to graduate, from LSAD(TUS) from 2023 to 2026 are eligible to apply. The scheme is intended for artists based in the Limerick region (Clare, Limerick, Tipperary).

Derek Speirs was born in Dublin, and graduated from the Polytechnic of Central London and the Royal College of Art in 1977. A ubiquitous presence at rallies and protests across Ireland for decades, Speirs’ acclaimed photojournalism is informed by a strong sense of social justice.

On Saturday, 20 June from 2.30-4pm to mark the closing of the Limerick iteration of 'Memory of a Free Festival' we will be hosting an event at the Belltable, Limerick. Tickets are free but booking is essential.

Cóilín O’Connell studied at NCAD, Dublin and the Sandberg Institute, Amsterdam. As Brass Neck Press he edits, designs, and distributes artists’ publications and zines. Collecting and editing found objects, images and texts are central strategies in his work.

On Saturday, 13 June from 12-2pm, Ormston House will collaborate with Limerick Printmakers on a free printmaking workshop as part of our exhibition 'Memory of a Free Festival'.

Alanna O’Kelly attended NCAD, Dublin and the Slade School of Art, London. Her practice incorporates sculpture, performance, slide installation and film. Influenced by feminist politics, O’Kelly explores ideas of the psychic conflicts of our shared history and the continuity of tradition.

On Wednesday, 3 June we will be closed to host a private workshop with Limerick Printmakers and Limerick Youth Service. 'Memory of a Free Festival' will reopen on Thursday-Saturday, 12-6pm next week. The exhibition will continue until Saturday, 20 June.

For the third year in a row, Ormston House offers an opportunity for recent graduates to join our Artist Affiliate Scheme for twelve months. Artists who have graduated, or are about to graduate, from Limerick School of Art and Design (TUS) from 2023 to 2026 are eligible to apply.

Orla Barry is an artist and shepherd who lives and works on her farm near Carnsore, Co. Wexford where a nuclear power station was to be built. ‘Kodak Moon’ (2026) is a new work commissioned for this touring exhibition, blending text, music, and animation.

Reminder! On Saturday, 23 May from 2-5pm we will host ‘A Spontaneous Cairn’ at the Record Room, Limerick. Join us for an informal afternoon event of moving image artworks and performative lectures. This event is part of ‘Memory of a Free Festival’ touring exhibition and event programme.

Congratulations to artist Isabel Nolan on the opening of ‘Dreamshook’ at the Venice Biennale 2026. ‘Dreamshook’ will be on view at the Irish Pavilion in the – La Biennale di Venezia, which runs from 9 May to 22 November 2026.

Last week members of the Ormston House team attended Supermarket Art Fair in Stockholm. We presented a solo booth by Daniel Tuomey featuring drawings, a multi-media sculpture, and a performance of ‘Stuck, an excavation’.

During March we welcomed the Office for Joint Administrative Intelligence (O.J.A.I.) to Ormston House for a residency. O.J.A.I., the collaborative practice of Chris Dreier and Gary Farrelly, operates between Brussels and Berlin.

Ormston House recently welcomed Esti Cadavid and Aisling Finlay to our team. Esti and Aisling assist us in the day-to-day running of the organisation and the delivery of our 2026 programme. Images by Shane Vaughan.

As part of our touring exhibition ‘Memory of a Free Festival’ a reproduction of the Smiling Sun logo in Irish is being presented as a billboard on the exterior of Project Arts Centre. The Smiling Sun logo was designed by 21-year-old Danish activist Anne Lund in 1975.

Introducing the remaining contributors to The Crone, our International Women's Day programme in collaboration with STARLING. Vivienne Dick makes multilayered, open-ended films which combine elements of documentary, performance and fiction.

In the lead up to our International Women's Day event, we are highlighting the contributors to the programme. Shirani Bolle is an artist based in Limerick with Sri Lankan, Dutch-German, and British heritage. Synthesize_Her [S_H] is a feminist sound technology organisation that promotes education.

On Saturday 7 March, Ormston House partners with STARLING to curate a programme of film, workshop, and live performance entitled The Crone, in celebration of International Women’s Day, 2026. Admission is free and all are welcome. Booking is not necessary and audiences can join at any point.

Artist Susan MacWilliam will join us to mark the closing of her solo exhibition Table Turning, on Saturday, 21 February at 3pm. MacWilliam will be in conversation with Jacqui McIntosh, curator at the College of Psychic Studies, London. Admission is free and booking is not necessary.

Susan MacWilliam has held a fascination with how humans have sought to document and quantify the spirit realm. Historical texts from her research are presented alongside other objects in her vitrine sculpture 'From the Artist's Library' (2025).

Susan MacWilliam’s vitrine sculpture ‘The Three Arts Club with Fifty-Six Telepaths’ (2025) takes its name from a twentieth-century group that supported young women in practising the ‘three arts’: music, drama, and painting. Supported by The Arts Council of Ireland and Limerick Arts Office.

For ‘Séance Room, 1931’ (2025), Susan MacWilliam has hand-stitched the diagram of the provisional laboratory devised by Dr. T. G. and Lillian Hamilton to study psychic phenomena. ‘Séance Room, 1931’ can be seen as part of MacWilliam's solo exhibition 'Table Turning' until Saturday, 21 February.

As we approach the holiday season, we would like to thank all who have supported Ormston House this year. The gallery will close to the public at 6pm on 13 December 2025, and our office will remain open until 19 December. We reopen on 14 January 2026.

'Book Reader with Leaves' (2025) by Susan MacWilliam has been informed by the interior of Ormston House and its pillar capitals. These sculptures suggest the book as a form of technology that allows intellectual exchange from one person to another, a metaphor for telepathy.
