Mazon Monday #325: Braceville Spring 2026 Field Trip Report
This is Mazon Monday post #325. What’s your favorite Mazon Creek fossil? Tell us at email:
[email protected]
. We held our spring Braceville field trip a few weeks ago. The weather was nearly perfect... partly cloudy with temperatures in the high 70's and low 80's each day. Field Trip Chairman Jeremy Zimmerman was working hard to get everyone checked in. Of course, there were many familiar faces and quite a few new ones.

490-Million-Year-Old Arthropod Fossil Fills Puzzling Gap in Fossil Record
SciNews has a story about the discovery of an important arthropod. Magnicornaspis garwoodi lived between 497 and 487 million years ago in the area of Quebec, Canada. The animal is important because it fills in the gap between the Cambian Explosion and the Great Ordovician Biodiversition Event (GOBE). It's discovery hints that the source of this gap is sampling bias not an actual drop in biodiversity. This research was published in the paper "New exceptionally preserved arthropod from the Furongian of Canada" in the journal BMC Biology.

Archaeologists Find Egyptian Mummy Buried With the ‘Iliad’
The New York Times has an interesting post about a discovery in Egypt. A 2,000 year old mummy in the burial site known as Oxyrhynchus had a papyrus fragment of the Homeric epic "Iliad" in a clay packet outside its wrappings. The mummy was a non-royal male,

ESCONI will have a field trip to Flat Run Fossils in Mt. Orab, OH on Saturday July 11, 2026. There is an attendance limit of 16 people. Flat Run Fossils is a new pay-to-dig site in the famous Mt. Orab trilobite beds. For many years, thousands of gorgeous Flexicalymene and Isotelus trilobites have been collected from this area. Other possible finds include brachiopods, graptolites, cephalopods, and crinoids. You will certainly walk away with trilobites – they are not hard to find!

A 75-million-year-old fossil reveals a shocking tyrannosaur secret
Science Daily has a story about the feeding habits of tyrannosaurs. The diet of tyrannosaurs has been long and sometimes controversial, remember when it was proposed that T-rex was a scavenger? Well a new paper in the journal Evolving Earth, found evidence of cannibalism from marks on a massive tyrannosaur foot bone. Interestingly, the marks were very small and suggest scavenging by a smaller individual.

The Rise of Eyes Began With Just One
Carl Zimmer has an interesting article over at the New York Times. He discusses the evolution of eye... but how many eyes? Some of our early ancestors, about 560 million years ago, might have had only one. During the Cambrian Period, 518 million years ago, some early vertebrates from China may have had two pairs of eyes, one on each side and a second pair on the top of their heads.
