Bird Day 32; Masked Lapwing V. m. novaehollandiae This is the southern subspecies of the Masked Lapwing and sometimes recognised as a separate species; the Black-Shouldered Lapwing.

Bird Day 31; Pacific Black Duck A. s. superciliosa Also called Grey Ducks in New Zealand.

Bird Day 30; Pink Cockatoo (C. (L.). l. leadbeateri) I love these cockatoos. When their crest is open, it’s like looking into a sunset. Please do not confuse these for galahs, who are also pink cockatoos.

Bird Day 29; Emu (D. n. novaehollandiae) *Casually searches up fun facts about emus since I don’t know as much about them as I once thought I did* . . . …Hold on, they can’t move backwards?

Bird Day 28; Black Swan We found some old photos from 2020-2021. Three new birds to add to the Bird Day series before I run out again. Anyways, the name for a baby swan is a Cygnet, and there are three of them here. How cute! (The third cygnet is hidden behind the parent on the left)

Bird Day 27; Rainbow Lorikeet Featuring a photo my sister took. Unfortunately, this is the last bird on my list of birds, so there won’t be any more Bird Days until I find another bird or take a better quality photo (which is hard with an iPhone 6 series camera)

Bird Day 26; Red-Rumped Parrot (P. h. haematonotus) The only place where they’re red is the lower end of their backs, so… yeah, the name makes sense.

Bird Day 25; Superb Parrot Superb. That’s all I can say. ✨𝓢𝓾𝓹𝓮𝓻𝓫✨ …and quite good at hiding in this picture, too.

Bird Day 24; Eastern Rosella (P. e. elecica) We used to always call them Rainbow Rosellas when we were younger. It was a little disappointing for 14-year-old me when I discovered that wasn’t their actual name.

Bird Day 23; Crimson Rosella (P. e. elegans) Elegant little creatures. Possibly why their binomial name is called “Platycercus Elegans”! (“Elegans” is the Latin word for “Elegant”, so… yeah!)

Bird Day 22; King Parrot (A. s. scapularis) Two photos today. Not because I missed a Bird Day…but because I have TWO photos saved in my notes of this specific bird. The one on the left shows two females while the one on the right shows one male. I couldn’t get them all in the same photo.

Bird Day 21; Yellow-Tailed Black Cockatoo (Z. f. funerea) Featuring the tree that was unfortunately chopped down. Now we don’t see these guys around anymore. At least there’s still a photo to remember the moment.

Bird Day 20; Eastern Galah (E. r. albiceps) Lovely birds that you may recognise from my “I don’t think that’s a lizard…” post.

Bird Day 19; Gang-Gang Cockatoo Easily my favourite bird. Cockatoos don’t often have a clear sexual dimorphism, though as you can see here, Gang-Gang Cockatoos are ones that do have a clear dimorphism. While both are grey, the males have a red head.

Bird Day 18; Little Corella (C. s. gymnopis) These birds generally live in semi-arid environments, though we do have a small population here in Canberra.

Our dog, Mickie, was looking for his banana, his favourite toy. After a moment of searching, we found it… …looks like Bert the Cat stole it.

Bird Day 17; Blue-Eyed Cockatoo Looks just like a Sulphur-Crested Cockatoo, but look! Blue eyes! Technically a blue ring around the eyes, but whatever. BLUE-EYED COCKATOO!!!

Bird Day 16; Sulphur-Crested Cockatoo Loud and iconic. When you think of an Aussie bird, these guys are definitely going to be one of your first thoughts.

I really want to re-animate this. …Unfortunately, I don’t have an animation app anymore. FlipaClip changed way too much since I last used it. Plus, I draw digitally on computer now, not on my phone. Still a fun animation, though, even if it was never finished.

Bird Day 15; Straw-Necked Ibis Different to the bin chickens in Sydney. Being honest, this year was my first year seeing Straw-Necked Ibises.

Anyone else got a cat that’s weirdly obsessed with sinks?

Bird Day 14; Indian Myna (A. t. tristis) I don’t really have much to say besides this bird being hated by most people where I live. They have a history of threatening the native wildlife. Knowing that, the hate towards them is understandable.

Bird Day 13; Magpie-Lark (G. c. cyanoleuca) While having “magpie” in their name, they’re from a separate family, thus not related to them. This one specifically is a male. You can tell by the black band around the eye. Males have a horizontal band while females have a vertical band.

Bird Day 12; Noisy Miner (Ssp. melanocephala) A lot of people don’t like these guys since they’re loud and territorial. They also get mixed up with the introduced species, the Indian Myna.

Bird Day 10 & 11; White-Winged Cough and Australian Raven (C. c. coronoides (raven)) The second time I forgot about the Bird Days, so the second time two birds have been posted at the same time.
