A polished, glassy shine covers this face. The crown above it stays rough on purpose, Egyptian sculptors roughened stone so paint would grip it. This crown was once solid blue with a yellow browband. The paint is gone. The texture built to hold it isn't.

Fifty-five inches tall. Cotton, burlap, glass beads, twine, leather, and wood, shaped into an elephant's head with huge fan ears. In Cameroon's Grassfields, elephants signaled power and leadership. Worn at funerals and coronations.

Gold dust doesn't sit still on a scale. Since the 1600s, Akan traders in Ghana's Asante kingdom weighed it with small cast weights like this one, an antelope just 2 inches long. The royal court kept elaborate sets. Ordinary traders carried about a dozen each.

King Tarquin wanted to expand Rome's cavalry. The augur Attius Navius said he could not do it without favorable omens, so Tarquin decided to test him. The king silently imagined an impossible task, then asked Navius whether it could be done. Navius read the birds and said yes.

This chair is held together by nothing. No glue, no nails, no screws. Just wood locked into wood. Made in Jiangsu province sometime between the 1600s and 1700s, out of huanghuali, a rosewood so dense it barely floats in water.

Its eyes are hollow. Its mouth is a gap. No ears, no way to wear it. Jadeite is harder than steel, worked with cord, water, sand, no metal tools. Jade sat 400 miles away, in Guatemala. Nobody knows how it got here. Olmec artist, Face, 900–400 BCE. Metropolitan Museum of Art.

A Mughal nobleman in the 1600s didn't carry a powder horn. He wore one. This one is carved from a single block of white jade, just under 5 inches long, made to hold gunpowder for a matchlock musket. Polished like jewelry first. Weapon second.

A woman playing double pipes leads three nearly naked men across this wine jar. One dances, one plays a lyre. This party scene was never meant to stay in Athens. It was painted around 430 BCE to be sold to Etruscans in Italy, people the painter would never meet.

A fish is grinning at you from the side of a 12 inch stoneware bottle. A potter in southwest Korea cut it there sometime in the 1400s, using a blade to slice through wet white slip and expose the darker clay underneath. The species: a small yellow croaker, common off the Jeolla coast.

In Anyang, China, someone poured wine into this bronze vessel, set it over a fire, and heated it for the dead. It's called a jia. 20 inches tall, cast around 1250 to 1046 BCE, the last royal capital of the Shang dynasty.

6.5 inches tall. Gold, agate, enamel. Built in London around 1770 by a goldsmith named James Cox. It was never meant to stay in England, and it was never meant to be used by anyone who bought it.

Before Mass, a priest ran this through his hair. Ivory, made in England around 1200 to 1210. Carved into both faces: a king who ordered a murder, and the archbishop he had killed inside his own cathedral.

A Lakota mother spent months on this before her baby ever touched it. 1900, Plains region. Full hide, beaded top to bottom, sized to hold an infant against the body. Making one of these was considered equal to counting coup, the act of touching an enemy in battle and living to tell it.

The oldest object in the Guelph Treasure, the most important collection of medieval church objects Germany ever produced, is this. A gold disc smaller than a coaster. 5.1 centimeters across. It's cloisonné enamel on copper, made in the Weser region of Germany sometime in the late 700s.

The wife gets the first shot. Not the duke. Not his courtiers. The Electress Sibylle of Saxony stands at the right edge of the painting, crossbow ready, while her husband John Frederick the Magnanimous kneels in the bottom left corner, still loading his.

Andrew was tied to the cross, not nailed. That was the point. Nails kill you in hours. Ropes take days. According to the legend, he preached for two straight days from the cross. The crowd turned. They demanded the local governor cut him down. The executioners tried. Their hands went limp.

4 5/8 inches tall. Villeroy porcelain, decorated in polychrome enamels. Made around 1740 as one of a pair. A figurine of a dwarf. Every inch of it is painted.

A crown made for no king. A keter sits on top of a Torah scroll in a synagogue. It's a decorative crown for the holiest object in the room. It never touches a human head. Andrea Zambelli, a silversmith in northern Italy whose workshop name was "L'Honnesta" (Honesty), made this one around 1740–50.

1784. Furet makes a marble bust. 29 inches tall. Bronze base. It's a clock. The face shows time. Open the bottom and there's an organ inside. Brass pipes. Enameled dials. Working mechanism. This is what wealthy collectors wanted: beautiful, mechanical, incomprehensible.

It once sat in the private collection of a Russian count. Before that, a Byzantine workshop in Constantinople carved it from a single piece of elephant ivory around the year 1000. 9 inches tall. Less than an inch thick.

Philip the Bold died in 1404. His tomb wasn't finished until 1410. He commissioned it in 1381. That's 29 years from commission to completion, and he didn't live to see it done.

The painting is at the bottom. You only see it when the wine is almost gone. That was the design. Greek drinking cups, called kylikes, hid the painted scene inside the bowl under the wine. You worked your way toward it. A slow reveal built into the vessel. This one is from Athens, around 460 BCE.

Agatha Christie's husband pulled this out of a well. Sir Max Mallowan, the archaeologist she married, was excavating Nimrud in 1951 when he found thousands of these ivory carvings dumped at the bottom of a well.

The stone already had creatures in it. Fossiliferous limestone, pressed full of ancient shells and sea organisms, millions of years old before a carver in the 12th century chose this particular rock and cut a human face from it. Ten inches tall. Beaded headdress. Eyes open for 800 years.

1.25 inches tall. Solid turquoise. Carved by hand somewhere between 650 and 1000 CE. The Wari were among the earliest expansive empires in the Andes. Their capital, near modern Ayacucho in Peru, held an estimated 70,000 people.

Cyprus, 300 BCE. Alexander the Great had been dead for twenty-three years. His generals were still carving up his empire, and Cyprus was caught in the middle, seized, contested, passed between successor kingdoms like a bargaining chip. Someone walked into a sanctuary and left this.

Three men paid to be carved in marble kneeling next to a saint. The saint in question was hacked to death on a road outside Milan in 1252. That's Peter Martyr, a Dominican inquisitor ambushed while traveling from Como to Milan. He was canonized 337 days after his death.

It looked like a 600–575 BCE Greek perfume flask. Small enough to fit in your palm. Shaped like a reclining bull. A hidden filling hole curled inside the tail. Seven years after it entered the collection, a lab tested it. The clay had been fired recently.

Charles Wheatstone invented the electric telegraph. He invented the Wheatstone bridge circuit. He also built this. The concertina was his creation, designed around 1829. This example was made between 1831 and 1837, over a decade before he filed a patent. He was a scientist. Not a musician.

She kept her love letters in this box. Probably. That's the working theory for what these ivory caskets were. A man gave one to a woman. The carvings were the message. This one, made in France around 1330, is now three loose panels. The casket itself is gone.

Someone checked the time by opening a butterfly's wings. The case is gold. The wings are white enamel, edged in seed pearls. The whole thing is 2 5/8 inches tall. Closed, it looks like jewelry. Open the wings and there's a clock face inside. Working clock. In a butterfly.

Every December, shepherds carried instruments like this one down from the mountains of Calabria and Abruzzo into Rome and Naples. They played outside churches for nine straight days before Christmas. Same slow melodies. Same drone. For at least four centuries.

The Cleveland Museum bought this terracotta boar in 1977. They catalogued it as Etruscan, circa 700–500 BCE. The brown burnished surface, the incised geometric patterns, the naturalistic shape all checked out. Then the conservators ran tests.

The price of the horse wasn't gold. Rustam is the greatest hero of the Shahnama, a Persian epic poem of roughly 50,000 verses written around 1010 CE. In this scene, Iran is in crisis: the throne is empty, a foreign army has invaded, and the country needs a warrior. Rustam is ready.

Nobody knows what it says. This is a stamp seal from the Indus Valley civilization, carved from steatite around 2000 BCE. It's 1.25 inches across. A small hole on the back let the owner hang it around their neck or from a belt, then press it into clay to mark their property or goods.

Daoist monks ground jade into powder and drank it with morning dew. The goal was immortality. Carved during China's Qianlong reign (1736–95), this 7-inch green jade boulder depicts the mountain paradise where immortals were believed to live. A bearded figure stands among the peaks.

His Barbizon School peers painted forests, light, peasants. Corot painted trees. Millet painted farmers. Constant Troyon painted the animals. This is 1858. A woman on a donkey, two men, a dog, a herd of sheep, all moving through morning haze toward market. The dust on the road has yellowed the air.

The knights jousting on this panel are using blunted lances. On purpose. It's called the Joust of Peace. Nobody was supposed to get hurt. The point was to look good in front of a crowd. This ivory panel was the lid of a casket, carved in France around 1340.

Louis XIV's cabinetmaker wasn't just filling royal commissions. He was inventing a technique that would bear his name for three centuries. André-Charles Boulle figured out how to cut tortoiseshell and brass into the same pattern simultaneously, then swap the pieces. One cut, two veneers.

Her brother Thomas was in the Tower of London when Anne Boleyn was executed. He had been accused of sleeping with her. He walked out. She didn't. A few years later, Holbein painted Thomas's sister. Margaret Wyatt, born around 1509.

Snuff is powdered tobacco. You don't smoke it. You take a pinch, hold it near your nose, and inhale. In Vienna around 1800, offering someone a pinch from your box was a social ritual. The box was a statement before a word was spoken. Gold body. Enamel panels. Pearl inlay.

Someone had a poem about detachment from worldly possessions engraved on their fancy brass bath pail. The hammam, the public bath, was the great equalizer of the Islamic world. You walked in, left your clothes and status outside.

The sticks are ivory. Pierced through, carved, painted, and gilded. The leaf is kid leather. Open it: nearly 19 inches of the Gardens at Chiswick House. Lord Burlington built Chiswick House outside London, with gardens that became the most imitated in England.

The Hindu god of fire rides a goat. Agni has been central to Hindu worship since roughly 2000 BC. This sandstone figure was carved in Uttar Pradesh around 1000 AD. By then, three thousand years of fire sacrifice had already passed. He's 28 inches tall. Flames rise behind him.

The pictures on the doors aren't painted. They're wood. Thousands of individually cut pieces from ten named species: tulipwood, boxwood, holly, maple, walnut, hornbeam, mahogany, cherry, oak, pine. Some of them partially stained to hit the right color.

Portuguese traders arrived in the Kingdom of Benin around 1486. Among the goods they brought to trade: brass. Artists of the Ìgùn Ẹ́rọ̀nwwọ̀n, the brass-casting guild of Benin, took that brass and made this.
