2025 watch no.172 - Double Indemnity (1944). “That was all there was to it, nothing had slipped, nothing had been overlooked, there was nothing to give us away…” A clever plot and three great performances make this crime noir a cut above.

2025 watch no.171 - The Dark Knight (2008). One of if not the best of the “dark” superhero movies. Superior sequel - rare - Nolan even gets away with having two villains. But having the film show a good man turn into a villain is sublime. It does help to have seen Batman Begins, still no notes.

2025 watch no.170 - The Butcher Boy (1997). “Fish, f**k off!” Francie Brady doesn’t stand a chance in this dark comedy about a raucous boy with a fierce imagination, a protective best friend, and a drunk pa. The voice over from Stephen Rea is reminiscent of A Clockwork Orange at times. #filmsky.

2025 watch no.169 - Happily (2021). There’s a lot of talent on display in what is two-thirds of a decent movie. Jokes feel fresh, acting is fine, but tonally… oof. I couldn’t engage with the downer aspects of the story, and by the end little made sense. Final third feels cobbled together #filmsky

2025 watch no.168 - Night of the Living Dead (1968). “They’re coming to get you, Barbra.” Indeed they are, but there’s nowhere to run in this dread-inducing nightmare. ‘Night of’ walked so that the zombie genre might… also walk (I prefer my zombies as slow inevitable deliverers of death!) #filmsky

2025 watch no.167 - The Battle of Algiers. One man’s terrorist is another man’s freedom fighter. The fight for the freedom of Algeria from the colonial rule of France is shown in all its brutality from both sides. An incredible pseudo-documentary: amazing to learn no real footage was used. #filmsky

2025 watch no.166 - The Long Walk (2025). After reading the book many years ago always thought it’d be tricky to make this into a film. They give it a good go but I’d have preferred a Hunger Games build-out-the-story rather than what we got: gross & violent. Thankfully leads are fantastic. #filmsky

2025 watch no.165 - Good One. The title, I think, is a play on being the willing daughter & on the answer you give dad to one of his many dad jokes. This is a three actor play, beautifully crafted, about two supposed grown men & one intuitive young woman on a hike with a sting in its tale. #filmsky

2025 watch no.164 - Thunderbolts (2025). I liked it. It’s like a powered down Avengers with a splash of Vought International. Less bash, more sass = more class. If you’re bored of the battles and prefer your superhero films with a bit more inner turmoil, you’re not alone. And you’re not alone alone.

2025 watch no.163 - Barbarian. I can see why people love this, it starts strong. The protag makes few errors as the uneasiness builds, until she makes a bunch of them to propel the story onward & the final third is such a letdown. I felt the same way about Heretic, maybe I’m not cut out for horror!

2025 watch no.162 - Dirty Harry (1971). Everything comes together perfectly in this crime classic about the uncompromising unstoppable cop chasing the crazy killer. Brilliant cast, brilliant score from Lalo Schifrin, coolly directed by Don Siegel. Timeless. #filmsky

2025 watch no.161 - The Warriors (1979). This cult classic has a lot going for it. Bog standard story and dialogue, but stylishly directed by Walter Hill. James Remar & David Kelly in early roles don’t get enough screen time, but excellent if amateur supporting cast. Just a lot of fun if simplistic.

2025 watch no.160 - Jane (2017). A wonderful documentary, full of never before seen footage of Jane Goodall’s first encounters with a family of chimpanzees. Heaven *can* be had here on Earth, so RIP someone who was a true environmentalist, conservationist and advocate for the animal kingdom. 🥲

2025 watch no.159 - The Good, The Bad, The Weird (2008). Big budget Korean western featuring many famous faces, including the Bad (Squid Game’s Lee Byung-hun) the Weird (Parasite’s Song Kang-ho) and the “Unstoppable” Ma Dong-seok. Barely lets up for 2 hrs so exhausting, but lots of energy. #filmsky

2025 watch no. 157 - Up. A film in 3 acts. The 1st is for anyone with a heart, the 2nd fun & funny, but the 3rd (as with Pixar’s other gem from this period, WALL-E) lets the movie down with silliness. It still has its moments - a dog chewing on a bone it should be dusting - & the kids will love it.

2025 watch no. 156 - Legal Eagles (1986). This one will never make anyone’s Top 10 of movies about lawyers, Daryl Hannah is fairly hopeless, but some nice chemistry between Robert Redford and Debra Winger in the screwball parts.

2025 watch no. 155 - Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969). “Who are those guys?” Watched this again for obvious reasons. The finest comedy western, written by William “Adventures in the Screen Trade” Goldman. In the same year that gave us Eastwood and Marvin croaking through Paint Your Wagon 😁

RIP legend Robert Redford.

2025 watch no. 154 - Lilo & Stitch (2025). Another inscrutable live action remake of a perfectly wonderful animation. And the biggest box office movie of 2025 🤷‍♂️

2025 watch no. 153 - Genie. They’re already selling mince pies in Sainsbury’s so why not? No meat in this pie either though. No energy, no real plot, no chemistry, no :spoiler: actual Tom Cruise. Comedy stylings of Melissa McCarthy are underused or poorly written, everything feels not genie-uine 😁

2025 watch no. 152 - 17 Again (2009). Mike is unhappy with his lot in life. He wants a do-over. Or does he? No surprises but nice performances, shame the concept gives Matt Perry little screen time. It’s the opposite of Big, in more ways than one, but it’s a fun flick to pass a couple of hours.

2025 watch no. 151 - Parthenope (2024). I was confused as Gary Oldman looks throughout this seeming love letter to Naples. I could stare at Celeste Dalla Porta for hours, which is fortunate as that seems to be the film. Acting & setting sublime. Story is equal parts shocking and dull. #filmsky

2025 watch no. 150 - Harvest (2024). I dug it. Not a horror as the poster suggests, but a serious film with a great script, great imagery, and a perfect set of mesmerising actors cherishing the ambiguousness of the story. Almost didn’t recognise Fear the Walking Dead’s Frank Dillane. #filmsky

2025 watch no. 149 - Terminator Dark Fate. Terminator since T2 has been a bit hopeless, but Dark Fate injects some life back into the muddled franchise. Luna and Reyes are good, Davis feels miscast but grows into her role, and the old guard reunite to have some fun. IIMDb rating harsh imho #filmsky

2025 watch no. 148 - Ramen Teh (2018). A lovely gentle foodie movie. It’s no Tampopo, it’s more a family melodrama, but it’ll get you in the feels. How could it not, it features an irascible grandma? #filmsky

2025 watch no. 147 - The Woman in the Yard. Good idea but feels like a short film stretched to 90 minutes. A woman is struggling to cope after the death of her husband. Now carrying an injury from the same accident that killed him & taking care of their two children, she summons something untoward.

Goodnight, Oscar now showing at the Barbican is incredible! Made me laugh, made me cry. Sean Hayes is a powerhouse of talent, the rest of the cast are knockout. Go see it if you can. No bad seats for this one.

2025 watch no. 146 - The Friend (2024). A man dies and leaves his dog in the incapable hands of his best friend. This one’s a slow burner, but Naomi Watts is impeccable as always, it has a gentle vibe, and though you might not see it coming, it’ll leave you heaving for breath at the end. #filmsky

2025 watch no. 145 - A Bigger Splash. Four people can’t keep it in their pants in this stylish sun-drenched drama from Luca Giadagninu. Ralph Fiennes is exhausting and infectious in equal measure and the director feels no need to rein him in. But when he’s not on screen, you miss him. #filmsky

Just caught JAWS at the IMAX 😊 Noticed a few new things this time of watching, including seeing the guy the mayor bullies into taking his family swimming sat at the town hall main table between the chief and the mayor.

2025 watch no. 144 - The Surfer (2025). Made in the great tradition of Ozploitation, a man inexplicably puts himself in harms way as he loses his surfboard and his grip on reality in the Australian heat. Doesn’t make sense on paper, but it’s a fun watch waiting for the Cage to rage.

2025 watch no. 143 - Materialists (2025). Pedro Pascal and Dakota Johnson and Chris Evans in a movie that’s one part Hallmark, one part Paulo Coelho, one part Beatles song Can’t Buy Me Love. Despite some ropey dialogue and the obvious message that no-one needs to hear, it won me over by the end.

2025 watch no. 142 - The Second Act (2024). They say a screenwriter must first master the basics before they can start to fool w/ the format. It feels like writer director Quentin Dupieux has been messing for a while, and breaking the fourth wall with four impeccable actors was inevitable. #filmsky

2025 watch no. 141 - Aliens. Sacrilege to criticise but on this rewatch I saw men in suits more than I wanted to. Also momma’s Clint snarl. It still has its moments, Ripley is all out of bubblegum, but it’s the original on Disney+ (not the special edition) so no turret scene: one of the best scenes.

2025 watch no. 140 - The Truth About Jussie Smollett? (2025). Both scenarios equally preposterous: his attackers waited in the blistering cold on the off chance Jussie would show to grab something to eat in the dead of night, or he organised the attack himself. Seems pretty simple to solve 1/2
