First shots with the Samyang 16mm 2.8 - it's a focal length with novelty, but a novelty which I think will wear off fairly rapidly... 🤣

When photographing on fishing boats, I’ve always craved a bit more width for a lot of situations. 21mm is as wide as I’ve ever used, 28mm for the past few years. So this new Samyang 16mm 2.8 is going to be a real departure for me, visually.

Strange how these two images, completely uncropped or adjusted, taken hours apart, seem to fit together perfectly to make another reality. 😳

Scottish fisherman, Dougie Maculloch. 7 years ago, I spent two weeks with Dougie, 100 miles off the NW coast of Scotland.We became good friends. Soon after my return home,the skipper of the boat contacted me to say that Dougie was dead. He was one the kindest, funniest, most troubled souls I've met.

During the early days of my fishing project, I shot everything on film, the Nikon TW20 was my favourite tool of choice. I bought 8 of them for £5 each, still boxed & unused. That was around 2008 when charity shops were practically giving away film cameras.

I shot a roll of film during my last trip, just for old time's sake, dug out my Olympus MjuII and loaded it with Kodak Ektar 100.

To Manx fishermen, there's a lot of people who are unlucky to meet between leaving home and getting onto the fishing boat ready to sail. You don’t really want to bump into any women (in particular anyone with red hair) on the way to the quayside. 🇮🇲

‘Three’ was considered the fishermen’s unlucky number, so Manx fishing boats would always try not to be the 3rd (unlucky) vessel to leave the port. This might mean trying to leave early as the 1st or 2nd boat out or hanging about until the 3rd boat left...🇮🇲

How to make a waterproof housing: 1.Purchase heavy duty silicone freezer bags (£7 each) 2.Use filter size of lens to measure a hole. Cut hole. 3.Poke hood through hole and seal around the filter with electrical tape. For total waterproofing use an o-ring and silicone sealant. 4.Insert camera.
