As the Health Minister says, charitable giving will always matter for hospices, but they need reliable government funding to plan care. 1 in 5 ended last year over £1m in deficit and 2 in 5 are planning cuts this year. Time is running out and hospices need fair funding now.

We’re in Parliament today calling for fair funding for hospices. Hospice staff make 1.4m home visits each year, helping people live well at home. Hospices could ease NHS pressure and bring more care closer to home, but without fair funding, many hospices are fighting just to keep their doors open.

Our visit came on the same day that data from the charity @hospiceuk.bsky.social reveals that one in five hospices in England have a deficit of more than £1 million, while many are cutting services.

Today, alongside my Lib Dem colleague @charlotte-cane-mp.bsky.social MP, I visited the @arthurrankhospice.bsky.social saw the wonderful facilities, and met with Deputy CEO Sara Robins. The hospice is set to lose almost £1 million in funding next year, leading to a loss of 9 out of its 23 beds.

Hospices are on the brink. Surging costs have led to many services being cut back – just as demand is rising, fast, because of our ageing population. The situation is not sustainable – and time is running out. [1/2]
