I caught up with UMass hockey freshman Vaclav Nestrasil on Wed. for a story that’ll be out next week. His impressive skill-set aside, I’m not surprised Carvel targeted him as a recruit. Nestrasil: “I wanted to compete every single week & that’s what we’re going to have here.”

During Carvel’s weekly Zoom with media earlier, he said Suniev is still out, but that O’Neill is back practicing. “We’ll see how quickly he can get back to pace,” Carvel said on O’Neill. O’Neill has been out since getting injured at Northeastern Jan. 10.

UMass hockey’s win streak is over after losing to Maine, 3-2. Black Bears goalie Albin Boija absolutely robbed Locmelis of a sure goal on a sprawling glove save with less than a minute left. Minutemen now 14-11-2.

Less than a half hour from puck drop between UMass-Robert Morris in the Desert Hockey Classic consolation game. Pretty close to a must-win game for the Minutemen, who hold a 8-8-2 record.

UMass hockey gives up 3 third-period goals to No. 16 Cornell and falls, 4-2, in its first game of the Desert Hockey Classic. Keenan and Cameron were the Minutemen goalscorers. Will play loser of Arizona St./Robert Morris tomorrow.

Carvel was asked yesterday about bringing in another defenseman mid-year since the Minutemen only have 7 healthy D-men on the roster. It appears #UMass nearly did:

Carvel on the possibility of getting Hrabal and Jencko back for the Desert Hockey Classic from World Juniors:   “We’ve had discussions to set that up if they want to. It’s a long tournament, it’s a long way out here, but we have made those options for the players.”

After the prelim round of World Juniors, Hrabal has a 2.36 GAA & .926 SV% in 3 games played. Czechia plays Canada in the quarterfinals. Jencko had 4 points for Slovakia during prelims, which will play Finland in the quarterfinals. Both games are tomorrow. #UMass
