Do you like miniature models in filmmaking? Well, you'll find this fascinating. Magicam was a technology that put actors inside miniatures *in real time* back in the lates 70s / early 80s. Even allowed for camera moves, cast shadows, and moving behind objects. Completely bonkers.

It's fun to look back at early prototypes of an app. This would become Metaballs: Spatial on Apple Vision Pro. In this super early prototype you can see a very basic volumetric field visualized in RealityKit, as simple translucent boxes. Within, two blobs.

Should be a bigger story that the U.S. has ceded leadership of global public health. In that vacuum, many threats are brewing simultaneously. We have the attention span of goldfish, but we're seeing the results of slash & burn approach to important programs.

The response to the Andes virus outbreak feels like if you had a little brush fire on the side of the road, and instead of putting it out they're like: "It's small. Supposed to rain this week. Too early in the season for a wildfire. Just gonna leave it."

Was lookin through Michael Crichton's CONGO recently, and somehow never realized it was written in 1980!? Read this as a kid in the 90s. Has all this stuff about image recognition software, etc. Really ahead of its time.

Reflexively, even as someone who likes bold architecture – I've had really mixed thoughts on this building. But it goes pretty hard in this photo.

This won't be popular here but I also blame the Biden administration for minimizing the pandemic as quickly as they could for political reasons, and for not doing more to reform global public health in the wake of the pandemic.

Finally, something does not have to become a "Pandemic" to be a horrible outcome. Allowing disease to spread, that has been endemic to a tiny region of the world, would itself be a public health disaster. People are playing with fire, and minimizing it for "calm" is reckless and irresponsible.

People are like "we're not falling for it again," and "we're not doing lockdowns again..." Yes — that's why you aggressively take precautions while it's small and containable. Risk isn't just about probability — it's also about the level of damage that can occur if you bet incorrectly.

The last Andes outbreak ended when a judge finally had to issue a stay-at-home measure for 50 or so people. There was social spread, including the superspreader birthday party event. Why you would allow people to return to their communities is baffling.

It's kinda nuts that anyone involved in the Covid response still has a job. I know people have the memory of a goldfish, but there was an opportunity to take Covid seriously while it was still small and instead there was delay, and minimizing. And then suddenly "welp, we have to live with it." 🤷

Despite constant reassurances that hantavirus is not Covid, everyone involved seems determined to make all the same mistakes again. What should have been a layup, will now stretch on for weeks into overtime as we wait out this 6 to 8 week incubation period.

What I'm going to be watching regarding Andes / Hantavirus is whether any cases appear in the next week or so related to the deathly ill wife who was asked to leave the plane. If the median window is being estimated at ~18 days, we're about to enter into that window tomorrow.

Everything people hated about Covid could have been avoided with more decisive early action. People argued that slowing down the economy for a few weeks would do enormous damage. As a result, we had much more drastic actions when it could no longer be ignored. Swift early action is cheapest!

I'm not an expert, so if that bothers you scroll away. But what I would do is: + Test / Trace / Monitor secondary contacts + Quarantine direct contacts (including people exposed to the symptomatic wife on the plane / airports) + Alert every community where there are contacts. (anonymously)

The thing I remember from Covid is: + "Not a risk" + "Not a risk" + "Fly to Disney World, not a risk!" + "Too late to do anything, just have to live with it now."

Been following the Andes / Hantavirus situation and based on the main studies available from the 2018 outbreak, nothing about the way it's being handled right now makes sense and I think we're seeing the effects of a vacuum of U.S. leadership in international public health coordination efforts.
