Given the complexity of stuff we work on, this was really fun to build. Simple & focused, yet still so many little details to get right. Visually, wanted something minimalist with bold typography. Functionally, wanted to be able to nail the 'good enough' + little bit extra precise balance.

I'm choosing to pause the planned app update as well as any marketing tomorrow in solidarity with the National General Strike.

Gotta love how they're like, "Now, we're willing to stand firm on the government shutdown over funding this police state. But, please bear in mind that our cowardice a few months ago does in fact make this a rather symbolic gestures!"

When your company has tens of billions of dollars in cash reserves, and you can't take a stand on principles – the very principles on which the success of your brand was built – what does that say for all of us?

Privacy has always been one of Apple's primary selling-points. That has taken a real hit this week. It's hard to imagine this CEO standing-up to government overreach. This cozy relationship may have yielded some tariff relief, but it's damaging to the core of the brand.

I've seen a lot of "CEOs have a fiduciary responsibility" takes this week... But long term, sucking-up to the king is awful for business. Everyone thinks they'll have an edge. Liberal democracy gave us the vibrant economy we have.

Grateful Bluesky exists, as content seems to be disappearing from other platforms, being suppressed in various ways. For the past twenty years we've really dragged our feet on protecting the legitimacy of the open web.

This morning I posted on my Instagram stories that what we're seeing in America is beyond politics. The story has 1 view. Wild, because I see way more political posts from people all the time. And even my most mundane stories typically have tons of impressions.

Y'all, I feel a deep anger about what's happening in America. This place has always had its problems, but it feels like people are in a waking-dream, or some kind of a trance. None of this is normal. It goes far beyond "politics".

For context, since the Democrats capitulation on the shutdown fight — that they were winning, mind you — two U.S. citizens have been killed.

Just wanted to give a shoutout to @jamellebouie.net who's been putting out incredible stuff. Go follow. It's been particularly very helpful to share his videos with our middle schooler who wants to be informed of what's happening in the world, and to be able to show her a calm, sharp perspective.

There's a world in which Apple puts out an ad this week where a non-violent protest is organized against a (fictional) oppressive empire, where the organizers use Apple's encrypted messaging, and creative suite of tools. Instead the CEO goes to a screening at Cinecittà.

There's a part of Lord of the Rings where after a long deliberation Tree Beard tells the hobbits that they've made a decision. "You have," they say? "We have decided that you are not ... orcs." ^ This feels like the current democratic establishment. Except Tree Beard would then ask for $5

Country has become unrecognizable to the one I grew up in. The 2000 election was obviously a big turning point – and a lot of people online today are too young to remember what it was like to live in a relatively high-trust society. Perfect? Not by any means. But, man it's getting dark out there.

My livelihood has depended on Apple for my entire career, but I have to voice my anger here. Steve Jobs wasn't perfect, and I know the Think Different campaign drew its share of criticism. But I miss this Apple. One that unambiguously stood for the rebels, the misfits, the crazy ones.
