During the #napoleonicwars and other conflicts of the early #19thcentury , Great Britain captured over 100.000 prisoners of war. Specially those taken early in the conflict, spent many years on British soil or shore.

The original yard model of Bibby WaveMaster Horizon was donated. At some earlier point, the model suffered some transport damage. Our colleague Frédéric Lebas has taken the best care of it during a restoration work. As you can see in the pictures, the model is now good as new. Now about the #ship:

This little coastal freighter had a rather eventful #history for a #ship of her kind, and quite an sad ending. She had an overall length of 66,5 m, a beam of 10,3 m and a capacity of just 744 GRT. A #maritime thread:

Our work with the historical archive of the towing company Bugsier has produced a new display that can now be enjoyed by our visitors on deck 9 of the museum! Follow the thread for their #history.

On November the 15th we will be opening a small #exhibition on deck 2 dedicated to the centenary of the #Chilehaus, one of the most iconic buildings of #Hamburg. The exhibition starts with an introduction of how the businessman Henry B. Sloman came to have the Chilehaus built.

#todayinhistory, 125 years ago, Albert Ballin became General Director of HAPAG and played a key role in shaping the company. Born in Hamburg in 1857, Ballin grew up in a Jewish merchant family and took over his father's company, which specialized in emigration, at the age of 15.

(1) Icebreakers are vital for a functioning shipping industry. Wherever seas may freeze, ships need the help of this powerful vessels to voyage on. They are also paramount for the activity in ports where even thin ice can stop boats from carrying out their work and also damage the infrastructures.

(1) Today we celebrate the 34th anniversary of the reunification of Germany. On October the 3rd 1990 the country, that had been divided after World War II and during the whole Cold War, was reunified. A #maritime #tagderdeutscheneinheit thread.

(1) Ships like the Bremen from 1858 brought the industrial revolution to the merchant navy. Despite her clipper hull and her three masts rigged as a bark, you may see the funnel of her steam engine hiding among the sails. Hybrid propulsion is, as you see, no recent concept. A #maritime thread.

The propeller of the International #maritime #museum #hamburg is 6 meters in diameter and 16,5 Tonnes. It was built in 1975 for the tanker #ship Maaskerk and given to us as a present by Wärtsilä in 2012. It since stands at our south entrance greeting our visitors.

#todayinhistory 110 years ago, on august the 15th 1914, the #Panama Canal was inaugurated. One of the most important engineering feats of the 20th Century, it allows ships to cross America through the isthmus of Panama, using a system of locks and the Lake Gatún, to drastically shorten sea voyages.
