A BIT MILDER: While no major heatwave is on the way, above normal temps are likely. Highs in the 40s, lows in the 30s. This is great news for a slow, gradual melt of some of that DEEP snowpack out there. The goal is to avoid flooding in the spring -- this is the way to do it!

Good morning, weather geek friends! Happy Tuesday. It'll be milder than we're used to today, but the surge of "warmth" comes with some wind. so you may not feel it. Temperatures make a run at the lower 40s today under a mostly/partly cloudy sky. Some gradual snow/ice melting!

WINTER 2025-2026 UPDATE: We are officially over the 80" mark for South Bend! That's about 15" above average, and we still have several weeks to go. For now... pretty quiet, no major storms on the horizon. But it would be pretty foolish to write winter off on February 9th... ha! :)

Good morning! More clouds than sun to start the week, but we'll at least see a few peeks here & there. Temperatures will be in the lower 30s this afternoon, which is seasonable for early/mid February.

It's been a true winter this year, so I know many are looking for any & all signs of spring. Here's one! In a month, we "spring forward"... causing more PM daylight. By that time, we gain nearly 3 minutes of daylight each day!!

LIGHT SNOW TONIGHT: A very weak clipper moves through the area after midnight & before sunrise, dropping a quick 1" (possibly up to 2") across the area. This will not be super impactful, but wanted to give a quick heads up for those early birds heading to breakfast, church, etc.

I don't know about you... but I am needing some sunshine! Not much (any) today, unfortunately. A few breaks here & there if we are lucky!

Good morning, happy Saturday! It's a cold start with most of us in the single digits. Some lake effect snow showers out there. Nothing major (by lake effect standards), but roads DEFINITELY will be slick in some areas after yesterday's brief thaw (that is clearly refrozen now).

PSA! The 30s we had today are now a thing of the past. 20s this evening, 10s tonight and single digits by early AM. Any standing water/slush will rapidly freeze. Also... terrible for the roads in general -- this is about as good as it gets for pothole development. :(

Good snowy Friday AM, all! Give yourself a little extra time on the commute. Nothing too major here, but reduced visibility with a quick 1-3" of snow between now and about 10am ET or so. We moderate into the middle 30s in a few hours... so this will turn to slush later on!

SLIPPERY FRIDAY AM: Nothing major here, but I do expect some moderate snow for a few hours Friday AM... mainly 5a-10a EST. A couple of inches possible... but it'll be wet/slushy, as temperatures warm to near freezing by 10am.

Good morning, everyone. Happy Thursday! Expect some on & off snow showers, mainly this afternoon. I do not think we'll see much in the way of accumulation... and inch at most? Roads should be in good shape.

BRIGHTER DAYS: I feel like this time of the year, I should post sunrise/sunset updates every week. We all need the good news, and I'm here to deliver!!! :) Nearly 2.5+ minutes each day! Have you noticed?

Good morning!! We're halfway through the work & school week. It's a cold start, but we'll moderate into the 20s later on. We should get some sun out there... although clouds will be stubborn, too. Here is something I haven't written in FOREVER -- winds will be light!!

Good morning, everyone! I know it's not a sunny day... but I have no snow maps to share with this forecast... so we have that going for us, ha! Expect mostly cloudy skies today with a stray snow shower or two. Otherwise, temperatures near seasonable averages in the upper 20s.

Good Monday evening! Overall, pretty quiet in the coming days with mostly cloudy skies. Temperatures slowly build through the week, but those AM temperatures are still quite cold. By Friday, we may surpass freezing... the first time since January 22nd! We'll see if we can do it.

Good morning, happy Monday! A few snow showers this AM, but do not expect major accumulation. However, with temperatures in the upper teens and lower 20s, any snow that does fall will stick to the roads. You may need just a few extra minutes to work/school.

IT IS OFFICIAL!!! Sunset tonight is 6:00p ET (5p CT). WE DID IT! We gain ~2.5min of daylight each day in February, which adds up quickly this time of the year. Super cold, I know... but there are signs of spring (eventually) coming if you look around! :)

OVERNIGHT UPDATE: Some patchy fog out there as temperatures crash into the sub-zero levels. Any fog will put a very light coating of ice on anything. Be careful on the roads tonight & Sunday AM if you see fog out there.

9p EST Saturday update: Hey, friends! With clear sky, calm wind and fresh snow, the perfect recipe for rapidly collapsing temperatures is in place. As of this update, many of us are 0° to 5°. By tomorrow morning, many of us will be sub-zero.

A solid lake effect snow band is impacting NW IN, with 1"+/hr rates in Lake/Porter counties. @INDOTNorthwest cams show the snow along I-94 and US-30. Travel will be tough tonight & Saturday. If traveling to/from Chicago Saturday, @southshoreline may be the better option for ya.

6:45p ET/5:45p CT: Going to get dicey tonight & Saturday for NW Indiana. I'm still expecting 6-8"+ of snow tonight. Travel to & from Chicago will be significantly impacted on the toll road, I94, etc.

We are on the upswing when it comes to daylight, gaining 2-2.5+ minutes EACH DAY between now and the end of February. If fact, beginning tomorrow, sunrise is officially pre-8am EST! BABY STEPS, BABY! Spring is inching closer!!! For CST, subtract an hour from these times.

LAKE MICHIGAN SCIENCE UPDATE: Lake Michigan ice is growing fast right now, about 2–3% more coverage per day over the past week. That jump happens first along the shoreline where the water is more shallow, thus it can cool faster.

More snow on the way for Thursday & early Friday. Nothing too monumental here, but it will keep roads slick... mainly north of US-20. Highest totals in Berrien Co. This band shifts into NW Indiana and Chicago Friday night/Saturday.

Good morning, everyone! We start the day off cold once again, but hey... no major heavy snow! BABY STEPS, RIGHT?? :) We should see some sun out there today (woo hoo!) for parts of the area as the winds shift a bit, but Lake Michigan still has a dominant hold on our region.

WIND DIES DOWN: Much of the headaches today on the roads is due to the blowing & drifting snow. This will subside through the evening as winds decrease after sunset, allowing road crews to get ahead of the fluffy snow.

It's windy, so expect some blowing & drifting snow on the way to work this AM. Luckily,,, the wind "mixes" the atmosphere a bit, and help warm temps this AM nearly 10° compared to a few hours ago! Still cold. More lake snow this afternoon.

BLOWING & DRIFTING: Snow is ending across the area (yay!!), with many areas picking up 8-12" of fresh powder. Because it's so cold, that snow is insanely dry. When winds kick up tonight, it will blow ALL around like dust.

BRRR! It's cold out there this morning! Those not dealing with lake effect snow are the coldest, with some sub-zero temperatures. Those of you seeing snow, it's making the roads even messier, so give yourself time to work/school. It's pretty rough on untreated surfaces.

Happy Sunday, all! It's a snowy day with on & off snow showers. Snow totals by tonight will be in the 4-8"(ish) range, with heaviest amounts for those of you south of South Bend. Temperatures will be in the teens, meaning any snow will be fluffy/dry and blow around.

BRR! I'm not a huge fan of posting model data, but this is the HRRR model, which updates every hour based on current conditions. This would represent actual air temperature, NOT wind chills. What this model is "seeing" is fresh snow on the ground & wind that goes nearly calms for a couple of hours.

What a blockbuster of a storm! For once, we are not the bullseye. However, south of US-30 looking quite nasty on Sunday. If you have travel plans on SUNDAY south of the area, I would change them. Timing looks to be overnight Saturday into all of Sunday.

Good COLD Friday, all! Temperatures are sub-zero for some, and in the single digits for others. It just depends if the lake clouds are helping you out. Wind chill values near -25°... BRR. We see on & off lake effect snow today, with temperatures stuck in the single digits. STAY WARM!

BITTER COLD: Just a "friendly" reminder that the bitter cold is on the way beginning tonight. Wind chills may be (at worst) -30° in the AM. Definitely -20s for much of the area away from Lake MI. We stay sub-zero wind chills most of the weekend, with air temps sub-zero a good chunk, too!

Hey, guys. I know all talk is on the big winter storm. I want to make sure we don't lose sight that lake effect will set up BEFORE this weekend. This is tonight (Thu night) through most of Friday. This will be VERY fluffy snow and will blow around.

Good morning, everyone! We had some light snow last night, so perhaps add a little extra time for the commute. Otherwise, looking OK today with temperatures in the 20s. We should see a little sun... so that's nice. Big arctic blast arrives TONIGHT.

MORE LAKE EFFECT: I know all eyes are on the big storm to our south this weekend (we will probably get SOME snow from it Saturday night/Sunday!), but I don't want to lose focus on some lake effect before then.

WATCHING WEEKEND STORM: Trends in data continue to point towards a more northerly solution on this weekend's storm. I still think the primary impact will be central/southern Indiana, but with that bitter cold air (see previous post), any moisture thrown our way will be VERY fluffy snow.

TIMING OUT THE COLD: A lot of you have asked for specific day-by-day info on the upcoming cold. Here it is for the weekend. These values would be the most extreme, mainly outside of lake effect clouds. The farther you are from Lake MI, the colder you'll get.

Good morning, all! We've got some light/moderate snow out there. It's enough to keep the roads a bit slick, so take it slow. Temperatures today will be "warm" in the lower 30s. After this weekend, 30s legit WILL feel warm! :) Have a great Wednesday!

CRIPPLING STORM: It appears likely that a massive winter storm will impact areas to our south, with a significant ice storm and 12"+ snow possible. This will shut down parts of the south for a day or two. If you're traveling Sat/Sun into or through this area, start planning backup plans now.

More snow on the way! A clipper system rolls through overnight, and lake effect sets up behind it. These are totals expected by early Thu AM. There is more snow Friday and into the weekend... but I'm focusing just on 24 hour totals for now to try to keep it simple. VERY ACTIVE!!
