My actual hot take on FFXIII is that I think it uses linearity as a really effective storytelling device - as the characters develop over time, the game and its systems and mechanics do open up, slowly at first, then accelerating as you reach Gran Pulse, the main hub of the game.

I think it's really funny that FFXIII was almost universally panned initially for being a "corridor simulator", while in the years since I have played several dozen games with completely rudderless, uninteresting open worlds
