We also discussed challenges for this traditional craft, including climate change and attracting the next generation.

Arita, the birthplace of Japanese porcelain, shows impressive traditional craftsmanship. After visiting a porcelain manufacturer, I was warmly welcomed by Mayor Matsuo. The long partnership with the city of Meißen is an excellent example of ongoing cultural exchange.

Starting my Kyushu trip with a visit to SCREEN in Kumamoto – a key company in wafer cleaning, essential for modern chip production. The site provides comprehensive training on SCREEN systems for specialists from around the world, including Germany.

I admire how Shigeru Ban combines sustainable design with humanitarian aid. His innovative shelters support disaster victims worldwide through the Voluntary Architects’ Network. He also created notable projects in Germany, like the Japanese Pavilion at EXPO in Hannover.
