No country relies entirely on pure, unregulated free market or fully state-controlled command economy.

The Nordic economy combines free-market capitalism with a robust, tax-funded welfare state. Practiced in Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden, it features universal healthcare, free education, strong labor unions, and high living standards paired with low income disparity.

We may need to prepare for Trump’s war with Iran to escalate. Prepare for higher prices. And eventually Trump may view his only way out is to put boots on the ground on Kharg Island or other targets.

But, history flows constantly and never becomes stagnant. All of this provokes mystic chords of memory. And maybe we recall the better angels of our nature. Because who we are is who we were. Washington has never been about politicians.

We could walk to the Reflecting Pool and look in to see all that was around us including ourselves. We could touch the water. The pool was not perfect and that was a reflection of our own history. Our history has not been perfect, it leaked from time to time, and even grew a little green algae.

Behind the Lincoln Memorial, across the Potomac River is an unobstructed view of Arlington House and Arlington National Cemetery. Where those who gave their last full measure rest. Then back along the Reflecting Pool and the Korean Memorial.

As we stand on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial we take the opportunity to view the reflections of our past and its history seen in the Reflecting Pool. All is imaged there, including our participation in the grand republic.

We walked from the Washington Monument to the World War II Memorial with its state obelisks, fountains, and stars. Then along the Reflecting Pool to the Vietnam Memorial. Up to the Lincoln Memorial and the great words written there. By the time we reach the Vietnam Wall the conversations quiet.

I had the privilege of visiting Washington many times. I have taken trips with my students, with veterans, and with friends and family. The walk between the Washington Monument and the Lincoln Memorial was a time for reflection, answering questions about history and the Lincoln assassination.

So far Trump’s Epstein file coverup is more effective than his Reflecting Pool coverup.

The Supreme Court 6 no longer pretends to be unbiased. They rule against Virginia redistricting and then turn around and rule that Southern states like Florida, Louisiana, and Alabama can. If they were consistent in their rulings all state could redistrict mid decade or all states cannot.

Posting on your own media is not governing. Posting demands and hissy fits is not governing. Posting unhinged content is not governing. Posting lie after lie is not governing. Trump is all about posts that demonstrate his mental incompetence to govern. Some adult will soon have to step up to govern.
