One of the techniques that RS writers use to subtly critique their predecessors and show how the publication has evolved is by quoting from past reviews and articles. I've done it myself. I wonder if readers notice? This is from the Laura Nyro piece that was published today.

I'm going to start sharing more music stuff here that's not rap. The Minutemen's "Take Our Test" got a lot of play from teenage me.

With Trump in Memphis today, I want to reshare this investigation from several months ago— How did his Memphis Safe Task Force change the city? Locals compare the atmosphere to 1930s Germany.

The Platner situation reminds me of former SF sheriff Ross Mirkarimi. Even after he was charged with domestic violence, some locals continued to support him. It was one of the more pathetic examples of Bay Area lefties refusing to clean house. (Feel free to add Aaron Peskin to this group, too.)

This was an incredible time for Bay Area hip hop. Solesides/Quannum (Blackaliscious, Lyrics Born, DJ Shadow and Lateef) were big then too. And DJ Icewater was putting out the best mixtapes

One of the most illuminating experiences I’ve had on social media is seeing scholars, intellectuals and journalists that I truly admire – people that often have multiple degrees – post the kind of dumb, reactive opinions that have none of the nuance they strive for in their best written work.

I've read far too many hagiographies about The Source's classic era (1988-1994) over the years. But this stands out for its honesty as well as its mixture of well-earned pride and nagging regret.
