I find pacing so difficult when writing. Everytime I set out to write a quick, pacy chapter I find with each pass I layer in more stuff, get granual, kill the pace. Then, I feel I have to trim it back. FInding the right balance is something I feel has eluded me for as long as I've been writing.

Teaching The Odyssey, start with referencing the Iliad, ask the class: who's the most famous hero to come out of the Trojan war? SIlence. He's named after a body part? Pupil Answer: Oesophagus? Yes, exactly that, Oesophagus the Greek, thank you.

There's something cruel in the fact that I can drive 45min home through crawling south London traffice, crafting the greatest lines of dialogue never commited to paper, only to instantly forget it all the moment I park the car.

Some days, the writing feels easy and flows so naturally. Today, it feels like it took all day to extract only 500 words.

It's silly, I know, but after making the epub of a new chapter and sending the updated file to the Kindle, I get a little thrill out of seeing my story there, almost like it's a real novel.
