During the peak years before vaccines (late 1940s to early 1950s), there were typically 15,000 to 20,000 cases of paralytic polio annually in the USA. By the 1970s, polio was eliminated in the U.S., with no indigenous cases reported since 1979. The iron lung industry might make a comeback.
