🚨 New mapping by @theguardian.com, @watershed-i.bsky.social, and @investigate-europe.eu has revealed thousands of landfill sites across the UK that may be leaching toxic pollution.   🗑️ 22,000 UK sites predate pollution control regulations, such as linings to prevent leaching.

Because they were created before we had environmental rules, many older landfills have no lining, they don't have filtration systems for rainwater runoff, + there were no restrictions on what could go into them - think of lead acid batteries, old flypaper treated with arsenic, PFOA on old pans.
