G7+ convenes emergency meeting as Russia intensifies strikes on Ukraine’s energy grid Amid intensifying Russian attacks on Ukrainian energy infrastructure, the G7+ Coordination Group convened an emergency session, Ukraine’s Energy Ministry said. More than 100 representatives from countries and international organizations took part, including the United States, Canada, Germany, the Netherlands, France, the European Commission, the EBRD and the Energy Community Secretariat, according to the ministry’s statement .
Ukrainian officials briefed partners on the impact of the latest strikes, which targeted oil and gas facilities as well as civilian infrastructure.
“This is a clear attempt to deprive Ukrainians of light and heat in the autumn-winter period. The Russians have not given up their intention to plunge Ukraine into darkness ahead of the new heating season,” Deputy Energy Minister Roman Andarak said.
He noted that over more than three and a half years of Russia’s full-scale aggression, international partners have provided significant support to Ukraine’s energy sector, helping the country get through three wartime winters and carry out rapid repairs.
With attacks intensifying again, Ukraine is seeking additional support. Priority needs include physical security and air defense systems, funding to purchase additional gas volumes, and energy equipment for restoration and repair.
Andarak expressed hope for continued partner support, stronger sanctions pressure on Russia and thanked donors for their contributions.
G7+ representatives, in turn, assured Ukraine of continued backing and agreed to hold another meeting soon to coordinate next steps.
Formed in November 2022, the G7+ group coordinates and mobilizes donor assistance to Ukraine, including efforts to restore and protect its energy infrastructure. Members include Bulgaria, Canada, Czechia, Estonia, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Norway, Romania, Slovakia, Sweden, Ukraine, the United Kingdom, the United States, the European Union, the Energy Community Secretariat and the World Bank Group.
Separately, in Shostka, authorities asked residents to limit gas consumption after damage to a gas distribution substation.
Earlier, officials said Poltava region experienced its largest strike on energy facilities since the start of the war. https://www.uawire.org/g7-convenes-emergency-meeting-as-russia-intensifies-strikes-on-ukraine-s-energy-grid
